Softball Recap: Thursday's Defeat Ends Hopewell-Loudon's Winning Streak

Hopewell-Loudon dropped their record down to 10-6 on Thursday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell 8-3 to the Gibsonburg Golden Bears. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Golden Bears this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 1-0 last Tuesday.

Araceli Velasquez put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

In other batting news, AnneMarie Berg made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one triple and one RBI.

As for Gibsonburg, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games.

Like Hopewell-Loudon, Gibsonburg also got a great game from a two-way player: Ava Amor. She struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off eight hits. Amor was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two runs.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Leah Hall, who went 2-for-4 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Cheyenne Reese, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Hopewell-Loudon wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 3-1 victory against Columbian on the 26th. As for Gibsonburg, they have also already played their next matchup, an 11-8 win against Lakota on the 28th.
