League recap: Surry Central stuns Bishop McGuinness in upset

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Surry Central, who took down 279th ranked Bishop McGuinness, 41-19. Colby Chilton threw for 90 yards and one touchdown and ran for 102 yards in the win.

Mount Airy extended the longest winning streak in 2A/1A Northwest this week by beating North Surry, 24-3. This was the team's seventh consecutive win.

Joe McNamara was the best wideout in the league this week as the Villains lost to the Golden Eagles. McNamara racked up four receptions for 71 yards. Thomas LaMuraglia helped Bishop McGuinness' passing attack out by catching two balls for 25 yards.

Greg Salomon was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 148 yards on 16 carries as Bishop McGuinness fell to Surry Central. McNamara also contributed to the rushing game with 57 yards on the ground.

North Stokes's Garrett Wood and Matthew Hopkins have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 2A/1A Northwest in both passing and receiving yards. Wood has thrown for 1648 yards this season, while Hopkins, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 39 catches for 545 yards. The Greyhounds' Blaze Acord leads the league in rushing yards with 1437.

Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when Charlie Jones' team takes on Mount Airy. The Villains' offense has scored 219 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while Kelly Holder's team has allowed only 75 on the year.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when West Stokes takes on South Stokes. The Wildcats are in fourth place, while the Sauras are in second place.

West Stokes was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fourth in the league. Earlier in the week, Jimmy Upchurch's team triumphed over North Stokes 57-20.
