Basketball Recap: Zapata Gets the Win

After losing to Pearsall the last time they met, Zapata decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. In a tight game that could have gone either way, the Zapata Hawks made off with a 48-47 victory over the Pearsall Mavericks. The win was all the more spectacular given the Hawks' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1028th, while the Mavericks are ranked 492nd).

When it comes to explaining why Pearsall lost on Saturday, don't look at Marcus Woodard. Despite the final result, he went 7 for 11 on his way to 19 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ayden Rodriguez, who posted nine points and three steals.

The victory made it two in a row for Zapata and bumps their season record up to 6-9. As for Pearsall, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Zapata will venture away from home to face off against George West at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. George West will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Zapata surely won't give up without a fight. As for Pearsall, they will head out on the road to square off against Uvalde at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
