Spring Valley has gone a perfect 6-0 against South Charleston recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. The Timberwolves will challenge the Black Eagles at 9:00 a.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Spring Valley is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: George Washington, who was ranked 22nd at the time (Spring Valley was ranked ninth). The Timberwolves were the clear victors by a 3-0 margin over the Patriots last Thursday. That three set margin sets a new team best for the Timberwolves this season.
The match finished with set scores of 25-11, 25-8, 25-19.
Spring Valley can attribute much of their success to Katie Dowis, who had 13 digs and two aces, and Addison Bailey, who had six digs and two aces. That's the most aces Bailey has posted over her last 14 matchups.
They weren't the only good servers: Spring Valley was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 11 aces. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as George Washington only served three.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for South Charleston, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. Everything went their way against Summit Christian Academy on Thursday as they made off with a 3-0 win. The Black Eagles not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since September 9th (when they won 3-0).
South Charleston not only won, but also showed off some consistency: they kept Summit Christian Academy between 14 and 16 points across their sets. The final score came out to 25-14, 25-16, 25-14.
South Charleston's victory bumped their record up to 21-19. As for Spring Valley, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 27-11-5.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Saturday's contest: Spring Valley has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 5.3 aces per game. However, it's not like South Charleston struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Spring Valley came out on top in a nail-biter against South Charleston in their previous matchup back in August, sneaking past 2-1. Will the Timberwolves repeat their success, or do the Black Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
