Softball Recap: New Washington Takes a Loss

New Washington extended their losing streak to five on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 2-8 in the process. They came up short against the Henryville Hornets, falling 17-1. If the Mustangs were looking for revenge after losing 9-4 to the Hornets when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Henryville, their win was their ninth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-3. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games.

For Henryville's part, Haylee Nicholas and Kyleigh Lienhart made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Nicholas pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Lienhart pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Nicholas has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. At bat, Nicholas went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Lienhart went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most runs Lienhart has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Henryville let Allie McAfee and Cheyenne Dobbs run wild. McAfee went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Dobbs went 3-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most runs McAfee has posted since back in May of 2024. Gabby Comer was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Coming up, New Washington will challenge Crothersville at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Tigers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.6 runs per game on average), something the Mustangs will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Henryville, they are taking a road trip to take on Crawford County at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Hornets are facing the Wolfpack at the right time seeing as the Wolfpack are stuck on a three-game losing streak.
