Baseball Recap: Cumberland Comes Up Short

Cumberland extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping them down to 0-4-1. They came up short against the Barron Golden Bears, falling 11-3. Surprisingly, this marked the fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor in this series.

As for Barron, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 6-1. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by eight runs or more this season.

For Barron's part, Glendon Thompson made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out 11 batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). Thompson has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one double. That double marked the first that he has hit this season.

In other batting news, Troy McDonough was excellent, going 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Collin Duncan was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Cumberland is set to face off against their familiar foe Cameron at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Barron will take on rival St. Croix Falls at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Golden Bears 2.6, the Saints 2.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.
