Football Recap: Douglas Bulldogs vs. Sahuarita Mustangs
After flying high against Rincon/University last Friday, Douglas came back down to earth. The Douglas Bulldogs lost 42-21 to the Sahuarita Mustangs on Friday. The Bulldogs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Mustangs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in November of 2023.
When it comes to explaining why Douglas lost, don't look at Ivan Higuera. Despite the final result, he rushed for 122 yards on only 12 carries, and also threw for 126 yards and a touchdown while completing 80% of his passes. That's the most rushing yards Higuera has posted since back in September. Kenny Nelson was Higuera's top target, picking up 107 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Rasheed Martin continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Sahuarita, throwing for 212 yards and three touchdowns while completing 78.6% of his passes, and also rushing for 76 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries. Sahuarita is undefeated when Martin posts three or more passing touchdowns, but 1-3 otherwise. Jhaden Williams was Martin's top target, picking up 66 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
With the defeat, Douglas broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 5-5. As for Sahuarita, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-3.
