Game recap: Cuthbertson high school football team falls to Monroe in back-and-forth struggle

Monroe (N.C.) took the final lead of the game on Saturday as it threw a touchdown with with under a minute left in the second quarter, bringing the team to victory over Cuthbertson (Waxhaw, N.C.) 41-24.

After taking the lead on a passing touchdown in the second quarter, the Redhawks led 20-17 at the half.

Monroe expanded its lead to 11 points entering the fourth quarter. MHS scored three times in the third, including once on a touchdown run.

With the win the Redhawks extended their winning streak to five games. Monroe defeated the Colts 68-0 last week.

Quashaun Chambers stood out for MHS in the win. The senior quarterback ran for one touchdown. He has now scored two touchdowns on the season.



When the two teams played each other last season, the Redhawks came away with a 52-50 victory.

The loss comes after Cuthbertson defeated North Stanly 49-24 last week. The loss snapped the Cavaliers' 2-game winning streak.

In a 2A/1A Rocky River game next week Cuthbertson (4-5) takes on West Stanly, and Monroe (6-3) will go up against Central Academy also in a 2A/1A Rocky River game.
