Baseball Recap: Rio Linda Takes a Loss

Rio Linda extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping their season record down to 13-12 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-3 heartbreaker at the hands of the Casa Roble Rams. Unfortunately, that's the fourth time they've come up short against the Rams this season, with their most recent loss being a 3-2 defeat on Wednesday.

Carlos Martinez was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Rio Linda's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 5-2 (and 8-10 when he doesn't). Mathias Culp also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

As for Casa Roble, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games. That's provided a massive bump to their 16-9 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games.

On Casa Roble's side, Bryce Engler looked comfortable as he tossed 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Engler has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Preston Schweiger, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Rio Linda is set to face off against their familiar foe Woodland at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Knights 4, the Wolves 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Casa Roble will square off against rival El Camino at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. The timing is sure in the Rams' favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while the Eagles have been banged up by seven consecutive losses on the road.
