Baseball Recap: Harlingen South Snags Eighth Victory in Last Nine Games

Harlingen South got themselves on the board against Mercedes on Friday, but Mercedes never followed suit. They were the clear victors by a 10-0 margin over the Tigers. Considering the Hawks have won seven matches by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Josh Ruiz was a major factor no matter where he played. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two hits in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in February of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Isaiah Olivares, who scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Kris Cruz was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Harlingen South has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games. This is the second loss in a row for Mercedes and nudges their season record down to 6-8.

Harlingen South didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, an 11-0 win against San Benito on the 22nd. As for Mercedes, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Edcouch-Elsa at 7:00 p.m. on April 1.
