Softball Recap: Clayton Victorious

Clayton proved they can win big two weeks ago (they won by 15) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-5 victory over the Garner Trojans. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Comets have posted since March 18th.

Izzy Tart spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Delaney Maynard was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Jenny Clement, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Clayton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive games.

Clayton's victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 10-5. As for Garner, the defeat snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 12-6 record.

Looking ahead, Clayton will head out to square off against South Johnston at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Garner, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Fuquay - Varina at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Trojans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bengals have averaged an impressive 10.2 runs per game this season.
