Basketball Recap: Antonian Prep's Loss Ends 17-Game Winning Streak on the Road

If Antonian Prep was riding high fresh off their 120-43 takedown of Savio last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Antonian Prep Apaches came up short against the St. Michael's Warriors on Friday, falling 92-71. While losing is never fun, the Apaches can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 26th, while the Warriors are ranked fifth).

Antonian Prep's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Jamail Garland, who went 8 for 14 on his way to 22 points, and Amare Guerra, who went 10 of 19 en route to 23 points. The contest was Guerra's eighth in a row with at least ten points. Mj Meurer was another key player, putting up ten points.

Even though they lost, Antonian Prep smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 18 consecutive matches.

St. Michael's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Aiden Disu, who went 8 of 11 on his way to 20 points and eight boards. Disu has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Nolan Barkley, who went 8 for 13 en route to 20 points and six rebounds.

Antonian Prep's defeat ended a 17-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 30-5. As for St. Michael's, they pushed their record up to 26-4 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home.

Antonian Prep will face off against TMI-Episcopal at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Antonian Prep knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past eight games -- so hopefully TMI-Episcopal likes a good challenge. As for St. Michael's, they will take on Savio at 7:30 p.m. on February 7th.
