Baseball Recap: San Juan Comes Up Short

San Juan extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to nine on Tuesday, dropping them down to 0-8. They lost 22-1 to the Mesa Verde Mavericks. The Spartans were not able to make up for their loss to the Mavericks from their previous meeting back in March of 2025.

As for Mesa Verde, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 6-5 record. The result was nothing new for the Mavericks, who have now won five matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

For Mesa Verde's part, Ryan Baumgartner made a splash no matter where he played. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 14 over five innings pitched. Those 14 strikeouts gave Baumgartner a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

In other batting news, Gavin Nelson was excellent, going a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI, three runs, and one triple. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. Marco Garcia Martinez was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI.

While San Juan had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
