Softball Game Preview: Wheeling Wildcats vs. Maine East Blue Demons

The Wheeling Wildcats will head out to face off against the Maine East Blue Demons at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Wheeling is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.

Having struggled with seven defeats in a row, Wheeling turned things around against Buffalo Grove on Friday. They came out on top against the Bison by a score of 5-2.

Ava Shrake spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Caitlyn Fitzgerald, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Viansa Pollina, who went 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Maine East was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their 13th straight loss. They came up short against Maine West, falling 27-0.

Maine East's defeat dropped their record down to 2-14. As for Wheeling, their win bumped their record up to 6-13.

Wheeling couldn't quite get it done against Maine East in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 as they fell 12-7. Can the Wildcats avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
