Basketball Recap: Belfry Pirates vs. Grundy Golden Wave
The Belfry Pirates's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their fifth straight loss. They fell 72-65 to Grundy. Belfry was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Golden Wave apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.
Despite the loss, Belfry had strong showings from Zade Rash, who scored 25 points along with four steals, and Carter Jude, who scored 14 points along with six assists and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryce Hagy, who scored nine points along with three steals.
Even though they lost, Belfry smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. This was only their ninth loss (out of 13 games) when they hit their own glass that hard.
Belfry has not been sharp recently as the team's lost nine of their last ten contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season. As for Grundy, they pushed their record up to 11-5 with that victory, which was their third straight at home.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Belfry will take on the Knights at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Cabell Midland presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Pirates in their respective states (the Knights are ranked 77th in West Virginia, while the Pirates are ranked 233rd in Kentucky). As for Grundy, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on the Cobras at 7:30 p.m. on January 30th. Council has now lost seven straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 12.
