Baseball Recap: Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Takes a Loss

Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop was the 11-1 winner over Wabasso when they last played one another two weeks ago, but their luck changed this time around. The Thunderbirds fell just short of the Rabbits by a score of 9-8 on Monday.

Kaden Rieke was huge no matter where he played even without the win. On the mound, he pitched five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run.

In other batting news, Layton Uecker-Hamre made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. William Bastian was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs.

Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop's loss was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 3-11. As for Wabasso, their win ended an eight-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-10.

Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop and Wabasso could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Minnesota Rankings. The Thunderbirds (ranked 274th) will meet Springfield (ranked 16th) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Wabasso will take on Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (295 vs. 128).
