Baseball Recap: Springfield Wins Going Away Against A.J. Ellender

Springfield never got on the board in their matchup on Saturday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against A.J. Ellender on Saturday. They blew past the Patriots 15-4. The Bulldogs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by seven runs or more this season.

Joe Ray made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). Springfield is 3-1 when Ray allowsone or fewer earned runs, but 7-11 otherwise. Ray was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.

In other batting news, Springfield let Will Sanders and Brock Cothern run wild. Sanders scored three runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-3, while Cothern scored four runs and stole four bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. That's the most runs Sanders has posted over his last 12 games. The team also got some help courtesy of Colt Lirette, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Springfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Springfield's win bumped their record up to 10-12. As for A.J. Ellender, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-14 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Springfield will take on Pine at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. As for A.J. Ellender, they will head out to challenge Assumption at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
