Lejeune hasn't had much luck against Southside recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Lejeune Devil Pups will take on the Southside Seahawks at 6:00 p.m. Lejeune will be strutting in after a victory while Southside will be coming in after a loss.
Lejeune is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They took down Jones 55-41 on Thursday. The team's explosion on offense also rewarded the Devil Pups with their most commanding win of the season.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Lejeune to victory, but perhaps none more so than Madison McQueen, who posted 20 points in addition to seven assists and seven boards. That makes it nine consecutive games in which McQueen has scored at least a third of Lejeune's points. Scarlett McLean was another key player, dropping a double-double with 12 points and 11 steals.
McQueen wasn't the only one working in the assist department: Lejeune was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Southside lost to Pamlico County on the road by a 68-49 margin on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Seahawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 331st, while the Hurricanes are ranked 144th).
Despite the defeat, Southside saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Michelle Brown dropped a triple-double with ten points, ten rebounds, and 11 blocks. Those 11 blocks set a new season-high mark for Brown. The team also got some help courtesy of Tamya Smith, who had 13 points and three steals.
The win was their first at home , bumping their record up to 3-18. As for Southside, their loss dropped their record down to 14-8.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Lejeune has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 27 boards per game. However, it's not like Southside struggles in that department as they've been averaging 34.5 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Lejeune ended up a good deal behind Southside in their previous matchup two weeks ago, losing 66-49. Can Lejeune avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
