League recap: Vernon extends winning streak with victory over Holliday

3A Region I District 5 recap Sept. 26, 2012

Vernon extended the longest winning streak in 3A Region I District 5 this week by beating Holliday, 17-14. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Lions.

Vernon moved up to 186 from 499 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Mark Bateman's team was able to make the jump by beating the Eagles 17-14.

Graham's dynamic duo of Ben Davis and Bryce Reeves proved tough for Breckenridge to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Davis threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns and Reeves had 85 yards receiving. Braden Lang helped Graham's passing attack out by catching three balls for 37 yards.

Orlando Haymon was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 22 carries, he ran for 160 yards as the Lions beat the Buckaroos. Teammate Danny Valverde added to the ground attack by rushing for 119 yards.

Graham's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Steers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Davis has thrown for 603 yards and six touchdowns this season, while Reeves has 17 catches for 244 yards. Dillon Gonzales leads the league in rushing with 423 yards.

Vernon and Holliday played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Vernon eventually emerging with a 17-14 victory. Haymon caught one passes for 15 yards in the win.
