Softball Preview: New Kent Trojans vs. Hanover Hawks

The New Kent Trojans will head out on the road to take on the Hanover Hawks at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as New Kent comes in on five and Hanover on nine.

New Kent can now show off seven landslide victories after their most recent matchup on Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Bruton a 10-0 shutout. Give New Kent's pitching crew some credit: that's the team's third straight shutout.

Not much got past Abbie Kegley, who gave up just two hits and racked up six Ks to keep Bruton off the board. Kegley has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive pitching appearances.

At the plate, Cassidy Branch and Mariah Leonard did most of the damage at the plate: Branch scored two runs while going 1-for-3, while Leonard scored two runs and stole a base. Another player making a difference was Libby Britt, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, Hanover scored the most runs they've had all season to find success on Friday. Everything went their way against Mechanicsville as Hanover made off with a 13-0 victory. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.

Lillian Parrish made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 15 over five innings pitched. Parrish was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with a triple and two RBI.

In other batting news, Hanover got a massive performance out of Emma Slutzah, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with a home run, four RBI, and two runs. Kaileigh Byars was another key contributor, going 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs.

New Kent's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-1. As for Hanover, their record now sits at 9-0.

Both the pair just can't seem to miss. New Kent has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 12.3 hits per game. However, it's not like Hanover struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 0.4. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

New Kent came up short against Hanover in their previous matchup back in April of 2023, falling 3-0. Thankfully for New Kent, Julia Cuozzo (who didn't allow a single earned run and only two hits while striking out 14 over seven innings pitched) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
