Football Preview: Hidalgo Pirates vs. Port Isabel Tarpons

The Hidalgo Pirates will square off against the Port Isabel Tarpons at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hidalgo, yet to win a game, are hoping to taste some of the success that has characterized Port Isabel's (thus far) undefeated season.

Last Thursday, Hidalgo was beaten by Rio Hondo 53-22.

Despite the loss, Hidalgo got top-tier performance from Jeremy Martinez, who rushed for 202 yards and a touchdown while picking up 12.6 yards per carry. Martinez showed off some serious burst, taking off on a dash for 69 yards.

Even though they lost, Hidalgo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 244 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in September of 2023.

Meanwhile, while Port Isabel put up plenty of points on Friday, the same can't be said for Valley View. Port Isabel breezed by Valley View at home to the tune of 48-0. Given the Tarpons' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 539th, while the Tigers are ranked 1102nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Luis Ramos went supernova for Port Isabel, rushing for 133 yards on only six carries. Ramos' rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 133 rushing yards dating back to last season.

Hidalgo's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Port Isabel, they pushed their record up to 3-0 with that victory, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season.
