Softball Recap: Marquette Comes Up Short

Marquette extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 13-4 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 10-9 heartbreaker at the hands of the St. Bede Bruins. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Crusaders of the 4-2 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Hunter Hopkins was cooking despite her team's loss, going 4-for-5 with two triples, three runs, and one double. That double was her first of the season.

As for St. Bede, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since May 10, 2024.

On St. Bede's side, Lily Bosnich was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Those four RBI gave Bosnich a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Morgan Mercer, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Marquette will face off against Yorkville Christian at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Mustangs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.75 runs per game on average), something the Crusaders will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for St. Bede, they will take on Sandwich at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The timing is sure in the Bruins' favor as the squad sits on eight straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while the Indians have been banged up by three consecutive losses on the road.
