Basketball Recap: Mayfield Wins High-Profile Match Against Las Cruces

On Thursday, Mayfield faced Las Cruces in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Mayfield Trojans skirted past the Las Cruces Bulldawgs 34-32. The Trojans haven't had any issues with the Bulldawgs recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

Mayfield got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Lorrena Viarreal out in front who went 6 for 11 on her way to 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jazlene Ruiz, who went 6 of 11 en route to 12 points and eight boards.

Mayfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 32 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Las Cruces' loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sofia Herrera, who posted six points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Herrera is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Danae Pacheco, who scored ten points.

Mayfield's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-3. As for Las Cruces, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 13-8.

Mayfield wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 39-36 win against Centennial on the 10th. As for Las Cruces, they have also already played their next contest, a 54-10 victory against Gadsden on the 10th.
