Baseball Game Preview: St. Croix Falls Saints vs. Cumberland Beavers

St. Croix Falls has gone 8-2 against Cumberland recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Saints will host the Beavers at 5:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

St. Croix Falls was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against Ladysmith on Tuesday. The Saints were the clear victors by a 14-2 margin over the Lumberjacks.

Elliot Wilson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up seven Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Brodie Allram and Alex Hoff did most of the damage at the plate: Allram went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and one double, while Hoff scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. That stolen base marked the first that Hoff snagged this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Drake Peterson, who scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4.

They weren't the only one making solid contact: St. Croix Falls kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ladysmith only managed five hits.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cumberland). They came out on top in a nail-biter against Hayward on Tuesday, sneaking past 10-9. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Beavers as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Cumberland let Troy Majewski and Calvin Cunningham run wild. Majewski scored a run while going 2-for-4, while Cunningham scored two runs while going 1-for-1. Another player making a difference was Jared Olson, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

St. Croix Falls pushed their record up to 4-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Cumberland, their win bumped their record up to 2-4.
