Softball Recap: Morenci Wildcats vs. Willcox Cowboys
Morenci fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Willcox on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Cowboys by a score of 17-16. It was the first time this season that the Wildcats let down their fans at home.
Tiara Jones was cooking despite her team's loss, firing off two home runs, five RBI, and three runs while going 2-for-6. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jaliyah Hernandez, who scored three runs while going 2-for-5.

Jones wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Morenci kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 20 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in four consecutive matches.
The defeat was their first at home , dropping their record down to 8-7. As for Willcox, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Morenci will take on Empire at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Empire will roll in looking for their 15th straight win, something Morenci surely won't give up without a fight. As for Willcox, they will challenge Santa Cruz Valley at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Willcox's pitchers better be ready for this one: Santa Cruz Valley has averaged an impressive 10 runs per game this season.
