Basketball Recap: Fort Walton Beach's Run of Five Straight Wins Now Over

It was a good run, but Fort Walton Beach unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Monday. They took a 44-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Daphne Trojans. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 109th in Florida, while the Trojans are ranked 22nd in Alabama).

Despite the defeat, Fort Walton Beach had strong showings from SaRuan Newton, who posted 23 points, and Alexis Smith, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 21 boards. The contest was Newton's sixth in a row with at least ten points.

Even though they lost, Fort Walton Beach smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since the start of last season.

Daphne was led to victory by Abagail Johnson and Fredayshia Goodwin. Johnson went 5 of 11 on her way to 12 points along with six boards and six steals, while Goodwin put up 11 points. Johnson has been hot for a while, having posted three or more steals the last nine times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kamorya Johnson, who had eight points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals.

Fort Walton Beach's loss dropped their record down to 6-6. As for Daphne, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season.

Fort Walton Beach wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 61-39 victory against Pace on the 3rd. As for Daphne, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 48-35 win against T.R. Miller on the 3rd.
