Having struggled with seven defeats in a row, James River Midlothian turned things around against Richmond High School for the Arts on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 19-1 margin over the Bulldogs. The Rapids not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 30, 2024 (when they won 23-4).
Sam Stallard and Georgia Swenck made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Stallard struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Swenck struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. Those six strikeouts gave her a new career-high. At the plate, Stallard went 3-for-4 with five RBI, one run, and one double, while Swenck got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, two RBI, and one double.
In other batting news, Hailey Metacarpa was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with four runs and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Smith, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
James River Midlothian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .778. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Clover Hill unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Monday. They fell just short of Powhatan by a score of 4-3.
Clover Hill saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Madison Hayes, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Clover Hill's loss dropped their record down to 12-5. As for James River Midlothian, their victory bumped their record up to 3-14.
Wednesday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. James River Midlothian hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .316. However, it's not like Clover Hill struggles in that department as they've averaged .424. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
