Basketball Recap: Elmira's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Sunday

It was fun while it lasted, but Elmira's undefeated season came to an end after five games on Sunday. They took a 75-59 bruising from the Bishop Kearney Kings. The loss was the Express' first of the season.

Despite the loss, Elmira had strong showings from Meya Smith, who went 10 of 17 en route to 21 points and eight rebounds, and Mariah Matias, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 18 boards. With that strong performance, Smith is now averaging an impressive 15.3 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashaya Wallace, who posted six points along with seven rebounds and five assists.

Having lost for the first time this season, Elmira fell to 5-1. As for Bishop Kearney, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 4-2.

Elmira and Starpoint will face off at 4:00 p.m. on Monday without much rest having both just played. As for Bishop Kearney, they and Cardinal O'Hara will face off at 6:45 p.m. on Monday without much rest having both just played. Cardinal O'Hara knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past seven contests -- so hopefully Bishop Kearney likes a good challenge.
