Football Recap: Central Proves Higher State Rank Is No Mistake

Central won the last time they faced Calexico and things went their way on Friday too. The Spartans took down the Bulldogs 35-20. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Spartans' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 259th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 606th).

Central had a senior duo take command as Luis Jimenez threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns while completing 81.8% of his passes and Joshua Garcia picked up 135 receiving yards and a pair of TDs. Those 135 receiving yards set a new season-high mark for Garcia.

When it comes to explaining why Calexico lost, don't look at Andre Lopez. Despite the final result, he rushed for 232 yards while picking up 8.3 yards per carry. Lopez was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 59 yards.

Central's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 7-2. As for Calexico, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-4.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Central will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Brawley at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st. As for Calexico, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Holtville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Vikings will roll in looking for their seventh straight victory, something the Bulldogs surely won't give up without a fight.
