Baseball Recap: Independence Comes Up Short

Greenbrier East hit Independence with a five-run third inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Patriots took a 10-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Spartans. The Patriots haven't had much luck with the Spartans recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Andrew Coalson put in work no matter where he played. He tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, Levi Barnett made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Independence's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-2-1 (and 1-8 when he doesn't).

Independence's loss dropped their record down to 7-10-1. As for Greenbrier East, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 16-9.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Independence will host Midland Trail at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Greenbrier East, they will be playing at home against Woodrow Wilson at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Flying Eagles will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something the Spartans surely won't give up without a fight.
