Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Ben Medina and Grayson Bauer Lead Mullen to Victory

Mullen's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Wednesday. They took down the Cherokee Trail Cougars 69-50. This was payback for the Mustangs, who suffered a 70-63 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Leading Mullen to victory were Grayson Bauer and Ben Medina. Bauer went 9-for-13 on his way to 25 points and three steals, while Medina went 6-for-13 to rack up 15 points along with five boards and five steals. Medina's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was Sam Schwertner, who posted seven points.

Cherokee Trail lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Jake Scott, who had eight points and three steals. Mark Petre also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Mullen's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-6 and their overall record up to 9-11. As for Cherokee Trail, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 8-12 record this season.

Mullen and Cherokee Trail could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings. Mullen will challenge Smoky Hill at 7:00 p.m. on Friday down 45 places (64 vs. 19). Mullen is out to stop a four-game streak of losses at home. Meanwhile, Cherokee Trail (ranked 69th) will meet Eaglecrest (ranked second) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Mullen has given up an average of 61.3 points per game this season, so hopefully the team got some defensive drills in this week.
