The Cheyenne Desert Shields will head out on the road to face off against the Doral Academy Red Rock Dragons at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Cheyenne is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.3 runs per game this season.
Cheyenne gave up the first runs on Saturday, but they didn't let that get them down. They blew past Awaken Christian 24-5. The Desert Shields haven't had any issues with the Lions recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.
Adrian Catalan was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over four innings while giving up five earned runs off four hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Cheyenne got a massive performance out of Esai Esparza, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Esparza has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Taven Thaker was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
Cheyenne always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .725. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March.
Meanwhile, Doral Academy Red Rock was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at the hands of Bonanza.
Sebastian Zaman was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
Doral Academy Red Rock's defeat dropped their record down to 4-9-1. As for Cheyenne, their record now sits at 14-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Cheyenne has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Doral Academy Red Rock struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Cheyenne's way against Doral Academy Red Rock in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Cheyenne made off with a 7-0 win. Will the Desert Shields repeat their success, or do the Dragons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
