Baseball Recap: Douglas Byrd Eagles vs. Seventy-First Falcons
Douglas Byrd extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 37 on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 0-14 in the process. They lost 17-2 to the Seventy-First Falcons. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Falcons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 12-2 back in March.
As for Seventy-First, their win ended a five-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-16. They not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since February 27th (when they won 17-1).
For Seventy-First's part, Chris Melendez made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. That's the most strikeouts Melendez has posted since back in March of 2024. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. He has become a key player for Seventy-First: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 0-16 otherwise.
In other batting news, Cory Bush was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with six stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Charles Gunnings, who went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
As of now, neither Douglas Byrd nor Seventy-First have any future games scheduled.
