Baseball Recap: Central Takes a Loss

Central extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 2-13-1 in the process. They came up short against the Oxford Wildcats, falling 18-1. Unfortunately, that's the fourth time they've come up short against the Wildcats this season, with their most recent defeat being a 19-1 loss back in April.

As for Oxford, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine games by six runs or more this season.

For Oxford's part, Connor Commerford made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Commerford has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two stolen bases.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sam Wheeler, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Another player making a difference was Mason Ruyle, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.

Central didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, an 18-3 loss against Udall on the 9th. As for Oxford, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next match, an 8-0 victory against South Haven on the 9th.
