Basketball Game Preview: Point Loma Pointers vs. Coronado Islanders

Two dominant guards in Grant Stewart and Loxly Johnson are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Point Loma Pointers will venture away from home to square off against the Coronado Islanders at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Point Loma knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past six games -- so hopefully Coronado likes a good challenge.

Point Loma's tournament run continued when they took on Santana last Monday. Everything went Point Loma's way against Santana as Point Loma made off with a 78-58 victory. The Pointers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight contests by 20 points or more this season.

Point Loma's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Na'Sean Hardy, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Stewart, who went 7 of 15 on his way to 19 points and eight rebounds. What's more, Hardy also racked up five steals, the most he's had since back in December of 2023. Jax Marple was another key player, going 5 of 11 on his way to 14 points.

Point Loma smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Coronado came into Tuesday's game having lost six straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They took their contest on Tuesday with ease, bagging a 77-23 win over San Ysidro. The matchup marked the Islanders' most dominant victory of the season.

The win got Coronado back to even at 8-8. As for Point Loma, their victory bumped their record up to 13-2.

Point Loma came up short against Coronado when the teams last played back in January of 2024, falling 68-60. Can Point Loma avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
