Baseball Recap: Weldon STEM Comes Up Short

Weldon STEM had lost six straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 2-6 to make it seven. They lost 23-1 to the North East Carolina Prep Huskies. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Huskies this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-3 last Wednesday.

As for North East Carolina Prep, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-7 record this season. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For North East Carolina Prep's part, Jarrett Warren made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Warren has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two hits in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, Seth Peele and Hunter Andrews did most of the damage at the plate: Peele got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base, while Andrews went a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Peele also got three hits, which is notable because North East Carolina Prep is undefeated when he posts at least three hits, but 5-7 otherwise. Collin Close was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Coming up, Weldon STEM will take on Warren County at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for North East Carolina Prep, they will challenge North Edgecombe at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Warriors have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.67 runs per game on average), something the Huskies will no doubt try to take advantage of.
