Baseball: Mount Spokane Player Turning Pro
Jarek Cunningham thought he’d play baseball at Arizona State.
Instead he’s headed off to rookie ball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Mount Spokane shortstop was taken in the 18th round, and when the Pirates met his money demands, he packed his bags for Brandenton, Fla.
Cunningham missed most of the season rehabbing a knee injury.
“It was a huge surprise,” Cunningham told the Spokesman-Review. “I kind of thought I’d go to school. The (Pittsburgh Pirates) guy even said it’s unusual to happen like it did. Just being able to get up and keep moving up the ladder and play in the majors, it’s going to be hard work but I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a little scary, but super exciting.”
