Softball Recap: Port Edwards Comes Up Short

Port Edwards extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to eight on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 0-5 in the process. They came up short against the Pittsville Panthers, falling 18-1. The Blackhawks were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Panthers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

As for Pittsville, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-4 record this season. The result was nothing new for Pittsville, who have now won four contests by ten runs or more so far this season.

For Pittsville's part, Brooke Grossman made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and not a single walk). Grossman has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Kaylee Jacobson and Halle Friday did most of the damage at the plate: Jacobson got on base in two of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI, while Friday went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Gwyn Kumm, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.

Looking ahead, Port Edwards will head out to face off against Wild Rose at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Pittsville, they will be playing at home against Columbus Catholic at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
