The Hondo Owls will venture away from home to square off against the Lytle Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hondo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Hondo lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Crystal City, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Tuesday's contest. Hondo never let Crystal City get on the board and left with an 8-0 win on Tuesday. The victory was familiar territory for the Owls, who have now won three matchups in a row.
Anthony Garza and Josiah Quintanilla did most of the damage at the plate: Garza scored two runs while going 1-for-3, while Quintanilla went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Kolby Gear also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Lytle). They were the clear victors by a 22-0 margin over Dilley on Tuesday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.
The team relied heavily on Toby Davila, who got on base in all six of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and five RBI. He has become a key player for Lytle: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 6-10 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Weston Jackson, who scored three runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Lytle always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .633. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March of 2024.
Lytle now has a winning record of 11-10. As for Hondo, their record now sits at 9-4-1.
Friday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Hondo has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .468. However, it's not like Lytle struggles in that department as they've averaged .436. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Hondo couldn't quite finish off Lytle when the teams last played back in April of 2024 and fell 6-4. Can Hondo avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
