3A Southern recap Oct. 30, 2012
The Classical Academy extended the longest winning streak in 3A Southern this week by beating Pueblo County, 31-28. The victory was the ninth in a row for the team.
Pueblo East took down Harrison 55-18 last week, the largest margin of any game. Derion Ibarra ran for 213 yards and caught one passes for 14 yards in the win.
The Classical Academy's dynamic duo of Jantzen Ryals and Alex Willis proved tough for the Hornets to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Ryals threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns and Willis had 88 yards receiving. Andrew Register helped The Classical Academy's passing attack out by catching three balls for 27 yards.
Anthony Greenway made the biggest impact on defense this week as Pueblo Central topped Sierra. The defensive lineman recorded two fumbles and grabbed one sack.
The Eagles' Kurt Rode and Felix Mestas have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Rode has thrown for 1955 yards this season, while Mestas, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 36 catches for 803 yards. The Wildcats' Nikko Valdez leads the league in rushing yards with 1245.
Entering into this week's contest against the Stallions, Rode is short just 45 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season.
Lane Lanier of the Pueblo County is only 40 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 105 carries Lanier has accumulated 960 yard this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when David Bervig's team takes on Pueblo Central. As it stands, the Titans are in first, while Zach Odell's team is in third.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when The Classical Academy takes on the Wildcats. The Titans have allowed 124 points this season, while Pueblo Central has given up 179. The Classical Academy allowed 28 points last week as it beat Jeff Wilson's team.
David Ramirez's team led 3A Southern in scoring this week after putting up 55 points on Harrison. Ibarra in the win.
