Baseball Recap: Breck Wins Going Away Against St. Paul Academy-Summit

Breck won the last time they faced St. Paul Academy-Summit and things went their way on Friday too. The Mustangs blew past the Spartans 8-2. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won three matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Josh Melnick spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on three hits and racked up seven Ks.

On the hitting side, Owen Van Horn and Garret Trench did most of the damage at the plate: Van Horn went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Trench went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Breck is undefeated when Van Horn posts two or more runs, but 2-3 otherwise.

Breck is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.3 runs over those games. As for St. Paul Academy-Summit, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-5.

Looking ahead, Breck will be playing at home against Southwest Christian at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Stars' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Mustangs' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for St. Paul Academy-Summit, they will face off against Mounds Park Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Spartans are facing the Panthers at the right time seeing as the Panthers are stuck on a four-game losing streak.
