Basketball Recap: Payson's Luck Changes for the Better on Thursday

Payson came into Thursday's game having lost four straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They managed a 58-53 win over the Bourgade Catholic Golden Eagles on Thursday. The Longhorns have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Golden Eagles, too.

Payson got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Omar Fierro-Nava out in front who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 boards. That's the most boards Fierro-Nava has posted since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Payton Stuart, who went 6 of 10 on his way to 15 points.

Payson was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Payson's win was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 6-9. As for Bourgade Catholic, they dropped their record down to 4-13 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight at home.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Payson will square off against Alchesay at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. As for Bourgade Catholic, they will welcome Northwest Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
