Baseball Game Preview: St. Augustine Saints vs. Cathedral Catholic Dons

The St. Augustine Saints will take on the Cathedral Catholic Dons at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (St. Augustine 3.4, Cathedral Catholic 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.

St. Augustine barely beat Point Loma the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Saints' pitchers stepped up to hand the Pointers a 7-0 shutout on Thursday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Saints.

Jonny Haskett tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over six innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2024.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Tyler Wick, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Tompkins, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

Meanwhile, Cathedral Catholic fell victim to Patrick Henry and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They lost 7-0 to the Patriots. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Dons have suffered since April 2nd.

Cathedral Catholic also got a good showing from Tyler Cox, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Cox has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Cathedral Catholic saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Diezel Hernandez, who went 2-for-3 with one double.

St. Augustine's victory bumped their record up to 15-8-1. As for Cathedral Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-8.
