Softball Recap: Hialeah Gardens Gets the Win

Hialeah Gardens took a 18-run loss the last time they faced off against Southwest, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Hialeah Gardens Gladiators won by a run and slipped past the Southwest Eagles 19-18. For the Gladiators, this counts as revenge for the 20-2 win the Eagles walked away with the last time they faced one another back in March of 2023.

The team relied heavily on Krystina Martinez, who went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, three doubles, and three RBI. Those three doubles gave her a new career-high. Kylie Brenner also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Martinez wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Hialeah Gardens kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. Hialeah Gardens is a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Hialeah Gardens pushed their record up to 4-3 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 16.33 hits in those games compared to only 4.5 in the others. As for Southwest, they now have a losing record of 2-3.

Coming up, Hialeah Gardens will be playing at home against Hialeah at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Southwest, they are taking a road trip to square off against Varela at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Southwest knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past five matches -- so hopefully Varela likes a good challenge.
