Basketball Recap: Josecarlos Acosta Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Rock Academy

The matchup between Vincent Memorial and Rock Academy on Tuesday hardly resembled the 2-0 effort from their previous meeting. The Vincent Memorial Scots had just enough and edged the Rock Academy Warriors out 62-60. Given the Scots' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 541st, while the Warriors are ranked 1306th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Vincent Memorial's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from JoseCarlos Acosta, who dropped a double-double with 30 points and 17 rebounds. That makes it 11 consecutive games in which Acosta has scored at least a third of Vincent Memorial's points. Another player making a difference was Edwin Martinez, who went 8 for 17 en route to 18 points and five boards.

Despite the loss, Rock Academy still got an impressive performance from James Whitley, who dropped a double-double with 30 points and ten rebounds. Whitley has been hot recently, having posted 16 or more points the last four times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Quentin Uhland, who went 6 of 12 to rack up 14 points along with six boards and six steals.

The victory made it two in a row for Vincent Memorial and bumps their season record up to 11-7. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.5 points over those games. As for Rock Academy, their record is now 1-21.

Vincent Memorial didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 65-62 loss against Calexico on the 6th. As for Rock Academy, they have also already played their next contest, a 50-48 defeat against San Diego Jewish Academy on the 6th.
