League recap: Discovery Canyon bests Pueblo County in blowout

3A South Central recap September 24, 2013

Discovery Canyon took down Pueblo County 48-8 last week, the largest margin of any game. Alec Wirtjes threw for 83 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 44 yards in the win.

The Thunder led 3A South Central in scoring this week by notching 48 points on the Hornets. Wirtjes during the win.

Cecil Cox was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 139 yards on 13 carries as Woodland Park beat Pueblo East. Dylan Schaller-Ward also contributed to the rushing game with 114 yards on the ground.

Smith was the best receiver in the league this week as the Cougars defeated the Eagles. Smith racked up 4 receptions for 79 yards. Junior York helped Coronado's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 21 yards.

Wirtjes put up the best numbers through the air as Discovery Canyon beat Pueblo County.

Cox provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Panthers beat Sierra.

Austin Micci was a key player and the best on defense this week as Coronado beat Pueblo East. The 5-foot-8 junior.

Leading 3A South Central in both passing and receiving yards, Bobby Lizarraga's team's Joah Smith and Smith have proven to be a lethal combination. Smith has thrown for 622 yards this season, while Smith, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 16 catches for 272 yards. Jamal Williams from Mitchell leads the league in rushing with 668 yards.

Woodland Park made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 7,970 from 9,677. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 29-7 victory over the Stallions last week.
