Baseball Recap: Plainfield's Win Ends Three-Game Losing Streak on the Road

Plainfield had lost three games on the road, but after bumping their record up to 7-4 on Wednesday that streak is in the rearview. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Martinsville Artesians a 4-0 shutout. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 1-0 on Tuesday.

Gavin Lykins made a splash while hitting and pitching. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

In other pitching news, Greyson Hardin looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Zach Rhoden, who went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and one run. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

As for Martinsville, they are on a nine-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-8. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since April 19, 2023, but that streak is no more.

On Martinsville's side, Jaxton Proctor spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered four earned runs on seven hits and racked up seven Ks.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Plainfield will welcome Terre Haute South Vigo at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Martinsville, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Whiteland at 6:00 p.m.
