Softball Recap: Santiago Has No Trouble Against Lakeside

Santiago was not the first on the board on Wednesday, but they got there more often. They put the hurt on the Lakeside Lancers with a sharp 16-9 win. With that victory, the Sharks brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.

Charleigh Krell looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Santiago let Eva Kibbee and Nahima Rocha run wild. Kibbee went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Rocha went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave Rocha a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Malia Lomeli, who went 2-for-5 with one triple and two RBI.

Santiago kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are 6-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

The win made it two in a row for Santiago and bumps their season record up to 7-9. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Lakeside, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-12.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Santiago will take on Corona at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Panthers' pitching crew has only allowed 3.7 runs per game this season, so the Sharks' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Lakeside, they will face off against Citrus Hill at 3:15 p.m. on Friday.
