Football Recap: Kempsville Picks Up Fifth Consecutive Victory

Kempsville had won four straight games and Rob Hughes Jr did his part to make it five on Thursday. The Chiefs put the hurt on the Kellam Knights with a sharp 35-10 victory with plenty of help from Hughes Jr, who rushed for 230 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 9.6 yards per carry. Kempsville is undefeated when Hughes Jr posts 80 or more rushing yards, but 1-2 otherwise.

Kempsville didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Jahlen Batty, DJ Hodges, and Casei Dargan picked up one apiece. Hodges has been hot recently, having also posted at least one sack the last three times he's played. Jason Galloway was another major factor on D, picking up three sacks, making 11 total tackles (5.0 for loss), and defending two passes.

Special teams was a major factor in the game for Kempsville, racking up 12 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Jacob Carty, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

Kempsville's win bumped their record up to 7-2. As for Kellam, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-4.

Kempsville has already played their next matchup, a 31-28 loss against Cox on the 7th. As for Kellam, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 17-10 defeat against Landstown on the 7th.
