Softball Recap: Pontotoc Find Success

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Pontotoc walked away with it. They walked away with a 9-5 victory over the Florence Eagles on Thursday. Nine seems to be a good number for the Warriors as the team scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Mattie Sims Koon looked comfortable as she tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Pontotoc let Star Williams and McKenzie McDonald run wild. Williams went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while McDonald went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most hits Williams has posted since back in March. Madi Collums was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run.

Pontotoc always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .538. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

The victory made it two in a row for Pontotoc and bumps their season record up to 14-11. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Florence, they moved to 17-10 with that loss, which also ended their four-game winning streak.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Pontotoc beat the Eagles by a score of 9-1 later that day.
